Life Lessons well Spent

Posted by Intuition Girl

In a day and age where technology appears to rule the day and the sky is virtually the limit in what we can achieve, I often find that young adults seem to have the most difficulty adapting to their new roles in life. Once young men and women get past raging hormones, acne and the feelings of peer acceptance – they are often still overwhelmed by the challenges and uncertainty of the times. It is easy for those of us, ripened with time and experience, to wonder how these feelings of lack and overwhelm can be so prolific in our youth. But given the nature of our socioeconomic environment, it is really no wonder at all. In fact, our high school and college graduates face a tough housing and job market.  To them, everything is not as clear cut as it may have been for ourselves and those who came before us.

Ever heard that old adage about earning a degree at the College of Hard Knox?  Those are some of the best life lessons well spent. For those of us who have been there, we might have some words of wisdom to share. We have seen and experienced what curve balls life can throw our way. Because of the encounters  that many of us have experienced in the past, we just might be the perfect mentors to our youth during these difficult times if they are willing to listen to our words about the life lessons that we have faced. I am sure there are many wise people who have sound advice to offer those who need it the most.

So how do we help them create an attitude of gratitude even when the chips are stacked against them? Though it is an easy question to ask, the answer is not always so straightforward. That is when your life lessons can come in handy. In a lot of cases, you or someone you know may have faced a similar situation when the burdens of life just seemed too much to bear. How did you or another individual make it past the hurdle? What mental and proactive strategies did you employ to overcome these trials? Remember, there are no “right” or “wrong” answers…only suggestions to help mentor those who need it. Teaching an attitude of gratitude – no matter what the circumstances may be – is the definitive sentiment to encourage in these desperate times.

Timing is also always the key. Knowing when to say something is equally as important as lending the guidance itself. Obviously, you need to search for body signals to determine the most appropriate time to speak with the young adult(s) in your life. Deep inside that mind is a battle of the wits. S/he is still trying to gain her/his footing as to where s/he is, where s/he wants to be, and ultimately, how s/he is going to arrive there. If you jump too quickly, you may feed her/his fear. If you wait too long, s/he may simply give up.

Wait for an opportune time to share your own life stories – not to dismiss the real emotions and experiences of the young adult in your life – but to make them aware of the fact that s/he is not the only one going through such adversity and tough times. Help her/him to understand that there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel; and that no matter what life hands her/him, s/he will come out of it okay if s/he is willing to go the distance and appreciate the blessings that s/he has in the here and now.

In the end, we are merely the watchtower in the bay. We can offer light and a pathway. The journey, however, is for the young adult alone to pave. These will be (her/his own) life lessons well spent.

Do you believe there is a need to change yourself?

Posted by Intuition Girl

Dear Friends,

Many of us believe that there is a need to change the world whether it be our school system, our government or the way business is performed but we fail to recognize the fact that all change starts on the inside of each one of us first.

There is an inner problem that is facing the world and until it is recognized and dealt with, we will not be able to illicit change in our world order. It is our unwillingness to slow down long enough so that we can take inventory of our own lives–our own household and see the bigger picture of where we have been, where are we going and how are we planning to get there.

PRACTICE exhibiting the same discipline on yourself that you wish to invoke on others.
Seriously! Gandhi famously put it: “We must embody the change we wish to see in the world.” If we wish to live in a society that is less violent, then we as individuals must take steps to become less violent whether in our actions or reactions to what is placed in front of us daily whether in entertainment, media or in social interactions because those negative emotions that we accuse others of possessing are being condoned by you.

Let us take our individual responsibility seriously and become the change that we wish to see in the world. Of course it won’t be easy–becoming a more conscious person never is!

Habits you can Kick this New Year

Posted by Intuition Girl

What? How do you know that I can kick my habit, Joan Marie, you ask? Oh, I know you can kick your habit. It all depends on if you know that you can kick your habit and how willing you are to make that change.  So what habits can you help me kick? Good question. If you are like countless others on the behavior treadmill, it is easy to get on and off the merry-go-round to which we have acclimated ourselves. One day you are up to the challenge, the next you are throwing in the towel. Sound like your situation? Have no fear because I am going to give you a list of habits that you can and will rid yourself if you are willing to participate in your own new behavior modification strategy!

Smoking like a freight train? Well, let’s take a walk back in your history and let’s figure out what hooked you on this nasty little habit. Was it peer pressure in high school? Maybe your parents smoked? Maybe you reach for that cigarette because you thought it was cool or even when you feel stressed or upset? Whatever your reasoning is for this habit, it is a behavior that you have learned to use as a crutch or safety net for yourself. For some it’s smoking, for others it’s a glass of scotch or food. I want you to think back to when you began this habit? Remember the first time you encountered this habit? What prompted you to participate in it? When you recreate the feeling you had that initiated your habit, you are able to understand, accept it and come to terms with it. Now say to yourself, “This habit no longer serves me. I do not need it. I am over it.” In other words, you can shift your mind set if you consciously choose to do so.

Whether it’s smoking, overeating, overindulging in shopping, nail biting, drinking too much, or other obsessive compulsive disorders or addictions — YOU have the power to conquer these habits slowly and completely once you understand the reason why you started it in the first place. Remember these experiences are not necessary for your lifestyle. You are the creator of your everyday life. Just as you choose to go after love, jobs, success, friendships or business dealings (among other pursuits), you can actively choose to spend your time, money and physical health on habits that can ultimately harm you or you can choose to spend your time, money and physical health on healthy new habits that will bring you success, happiness and peace in your life. Again, it boils down to your willingness to steer your behaviors in healthier, useful directions. All habits can be changed through discipline, conscious awareness and your sincere willingness to alter your outcome for the better.

Does this mean I have to make out a list of resolutions? Nope. I encourage you, however, to draw a map of the life you want to achieve and maintain. If it’s smoking you want to kick to the curb, or you want to lose the extra pounds you’ve put on over the years, make up your mind to do so … and DO IT. Draw a circle on a sheet of paper. Nothing fancy. Now in that circle is an image of you. What do you want connected to that central image? Health? Wealth? Happiness? Love?  All of these can be yours when you reject the notion that you have to have or experience something to live.

You are required a few essentials for living: shelter, food, water and air to breathe. The rest comes second nature. If you want a long, happy and prosperous life, you now have the choice to pursue exactly that. See, I told you that you can kick your habits. For what are you waiting? And I don’t want you to do it for the ones you love; I want you to do it for yourself. Once you love yourself fully and understand that these habits no longer serve you, you suddenly find that you have the freedom and empowerment to do all the things you always wanted to do without any regrets.

Still need some pointers or a personalized strategy to help you in 2011? Call my office and let’s work together to create the life you want to lead without the habits that have been holding you hostage.  I know you will be glad you did.

Until we speak again,

Holding on and Letting go

Posted by Intuition Girl

Throughout my tenure as an intuitive life coach, I have encountered numerous clients who have difficulties letting go of the heavy baggage that tends to hinder their progress; and more importantly, their overall happiness in life. Sometimes, it is easier to hold onto what we are used to experiencing in our lives. We grow complacent in believing that the emotions we are lugging around with us…bitterness, regret, anger, resentment, fear… are a natural aspect of our living. We begin to think that without these emotions, we would not be who we are; therefore, we painstakingly latch onto these feelings to keep our spirit fired up. That is the misconception, however. As long as we are holding onto these emotions (that do not serve our purpose), we are extinguishing our proverbial fire within our spirits. We are unintentionally draining our life-force and creating a black hole instead of a bright, shining flame.

You need a bright flame to attract all the positive things you want in life, and the only way to reignite that fire in your spirit, is to clear the space from all the empty and negative feelings that have become permanent place-holders in your life. When you think about it, do you really need to continue feeling angry or fearful? What purpose is it serving? Besides keeping you angry or scared, what are you personally getting out of these feelings? Do they improve your day-to-day life? Do they make you feel empowered? No. Each day that you hold onto these unforgiving emotions, is yet another day that you are stripping your own power away from you. In fact, you are giving away your personal empowerment to these feelings every time you succumb to them. It’s not worth it. Believe me — in the long run, you are better off forgiving yourself and letting go of all the past baggage you’ve been harboring in your life.

What’s in a word? Let’s begin with the word, “forgiveness“. To many, it means forgiving others for past mistakes or hurts. In truth, forgiveness begins with you. One cannot forgive another until he has forgiven himself first. It takes genuine effort and a big dose of humility to forgive others, but it takes an even stronger individual to look into the mirror and say: “I forgive you. I forgive you for all the anger you have had in your life. I forgive you for all the emptiness you have felt. I forgive you for all the regrets that you have had. I forgive you for not loving yourself enough.” That is a lot to say to yourself, but perhaps you have just one or two things you need to say to clear the air. A lot of times, the simple act of forgiving yourself aloud gives you the opening to releasing the emotional baggage in your life.  Breathe. It’s okay.

Once you have opened the door to positivity and potentiality in your life by letting go of past hurts and regrets, your internal flame that ignites your spirit with the Universal flow of energy will begin to shine brighter and stronger. So much so, that suddenly you begin to feel alive again. You begin to feel empowered and ready to take on the world each and every day with a renewed sense of passion and vigor. Your spirit does not want to have its life-force extinguished. It is begging you to stop holding onto the animosity and sorrow… stop holding onto the disappointments and worry… stop holding onto the fear. It is time to let go …just let it go. Breathe. Look into the mirror right now and tell yourself: “I forgive you.” There. Doesn’t that already feel better? Can’t you begin to feel the emotional baggage from your past being released from your spirit? It has been a heavy load to carry, hasn’t it? Now is the time for you to let it go. Let it all go.

I would love to work with you and help you to clear the space for a new and improved you. Together, we can meet your life challenges with the right intuitive ingredients to create the success and happiness your heart desires. Drop me a line today and let me help you reignite your life force with the passion and greatness that you deserve!

Your Intuition is your Inner Compass

Posted by Intuition Girl

Have you ever taken a good look at a compass? It is typically round and is used as a directional guide so that you can distinguish which way is north, south, east or west. Without a compass, you could easily get lost in the elements.

Generally, you have an idea of where you have to go and memorization habitually lets you find your way to the store, to work, to the gas station, and even simple places like the bathroom or living room in your house. Your directional compass aids you in locating various spots all around you.

But you also have an internal compass that acts as your intuition; your inner steering wheel, which guides your conscious and sub-conscious moves in your life. How does it work, you ask? Similar to your memory compass, your intuitive compass compels you to act or react in certain situations. For instance, if an opportunity or challenge presents itself to you, your inner compass will guide you to respond in one way or another. If you have finely-tuned your intuition through meditation and other mind training, your inner compass is ultimately going to lead you in the appropriate direction. So, if a sudden job prospect opens up to you (among other potentialities) you will be both mentally and emotionally prepared to step up to the challenge; or in some cases, stay the course. How would you respond at this moment, for instance, if a friend knocked on your door and asked you if you’re ready to take on a better position at his company? Or, what if the object of your desires suddenly approaches you with a proposal of love? Are you ready to be responsible for what it is you truly want?

Let’s go a bit deeper…what if I told you that you may have been living an illusion? In truth, most of us have constructed an illusion to disguise our authentic self, our authentic being, the truth of who we are –after all, it is easier to put on a veil to cover up our bottled emotions, our fears, our sorrows and our regrets, among others. But as you begin to unlock your hidden power of your inner compass, you begin to enable your intuition to lay the groundwork for you so that you can set the foundation for your authentic success.

Think of it this way: if you can train your mind to memorize the places that you visit day in and day out without fail, imagine how well you can set the coordinates for your inner compass to generate and attract love, happiness, health, wealth and prosperity! Now is the perfect time for you to set your inner compass to the field that you can magnify the most: your success.
